From time to time….

I host couch surfers. They come and they go but they are always fun. I have kept in touch with most of them as they live on beyond the red couch and to say its been a blast would be an understatement. Many times I am not afforded the time to give them the tour, but sometimes I am fortunate enough and off we go. This time I happened to be hosting the lovely Reba. She was a very interesting gal who had been traveling the better part of the past year. She entertained me with her stories and told me of magical places she had visited.

As we neared Sylvan Lake we encountered some of the best Black Hills weather, I can only describe it as a down pouring of not-quite-snow-not-quite-hail pellets complete with thunder and lightning. The slushy pea-sized balls quickly coated the road and made for conditions the cars in front of us were not comfortable proceeding in. One by one they turned around as we put our faith into the pathfinder and trudged on. Our efforts didnt go unrewarded and although it was chilly and a bit windy, the hills hung low and almost stuck to the tops of the mystical granite.

We made the loop around Harney from Needles Higway and back down Iron Mountain Road and when we got back to lovely Keystone, I turned left instead of right so she could see Mt Rushmore proper. (Although we were both much more taken with the baby mountain goat)

All in all, it was a nice little adventure and it left me once again with the feeling that I live in a pretty alright place. Gods country, as they say….
